💪Finkel's Fast Five 106 - February 7, 2020
FINKEL'S FAST FIVE - ISSUE #106 - February 7th, 2020
Hey! Thank you so much for reading and subscribing. Here are 5 tremendous things I came across this week. Enjoy! - Jon
ONE
MOVIES - Every now and then you come across a film so incredible, so unique, so violently absurd and joyous that you wonder if it was made as the result of a bar bet between producers. By a show of hands, how many of you have heard of the Mike Tyson and Steven Seagal action-thriller, China Salesman? Zero? One?
This movie... I don't want to oversell it... But it's something else. Examples: Tyson throws an uppercut that knocks a man 20-feet across a bar, punches through a beer barrel, takes a bottle directly over the head, then a roundhouse kick square on the side of the head, then fights four guys at once...all in the first 7 minutes. And it only gets better. It's a 'B' movie for sure...but the 'B' stands for Best Ever. It's on Netflix now. Watch the trailer here.
TWO
FITNESS - I'm always on the lookout for out-of-the-box workout routines and meathead stuff and I've started following a new guy on Twitter who is both creative and effective. His name says it all: Primal Swoldier. Awesome, right?
He's billed as a kettlebell specialist at Onnit, but he's more than that. The best example of a really creative routine to do if you have the space is this tennis ball plus burpees plus shadow boxing wall ball game he came up with. Some of his ideas aren't realistic if you don't have access to a large facility, but you can do variations that work for you.
THREE
LEADERSHIP - There has been an overwhelming number of features and retrospectives and interviews and articles honoring and celebrating Kobe Bryant the last few weeks. A lot of the career/life overviews have been excellent, but this Book of Basketball podcast from Bill Simmons about the night Kobe called him to talk about leadership was outstanding.
The podcast is only a half-hour, but it starts with a text Simmons received randomly on a Saturday night from Kobe, who wanted to talk about a feature Simmons wrote on leadership after spending a few days with Celtics icon and NBA legend, Bill Russell. The call, the discussion, the dissection of how Kobe tried to lead... all of it is fascinating stuff and it's probably the best single piece of content Simmons has put out in a long time. If any of the above topics interest you, absolutely listen to it here.
FOUR
BOOKS - We've had a lot of new subscribers join us here on the FF5 the last few months, thanks to many of you forwarding these e-mails and also to word of mouth. Truly, thank you all for sharing the FF5 and growing our little community with me. One pattern I've noticed is that every few weeks someone will write asking about how they can read more books or how I read so many (or something along those lines).
After getting a few of these e-mails last week, I decided to write a blog post compiling all of my answers into a 'How I Read One Book Every 10 Days' feature. Basically, how to read 35 books a year. I knocked down my thoughts to 6 easy tips you can follow that have worked for me. No hacks. No tricks. Just simple stuff you can do. It's been one of the most popular posts I've ever written. Read it here.
