FINKEL'S FAST FIVE - ISSUE #43
NOVEMBER 23rd, 2018
"I Found the Best Burger Place in America. Then I Killed It."
How's that for a headline? The writer, Kevin Alexander, had me at 'burger'. This is a really amazing and (relatively) tragic story about how after a burger place in Portland was given the honor of having the #1 burger in the country, the fame overwhelmed the place and choked it. Excellent read (and the link to the other 99 best burger places is cool, too). Here's the story.
A Fantastic Book About an Insane, True Prison Escape That Just Happens to Star Winston Churchill:
I'm on record as saying that Candice Millard is one of my all-time favorite writers. Her books on Teddy Roosevelt (River of Doubt) and James Garfield (Destiny of the Republic) are brilliant and her newest book, Hero of the Empire: The Boer War, a Daring Escape, and the Making of Winston Churchill, is on par with the others. I've read a few books on Churchill, whose life was punctuated with major historical moments, but this reads more like an action movie at times. Great gift or holiday travel read.
Did you miss the biggest sports controversy of the week? It didn't involve the NFL or LeBron. It involved darts. And farts. And it's great:
The New York Post nailed the headline in their feature section: Dart Fart Controversy. Aside from the amazing puns about how 'something doesn't smell right' and how the controversy 'stinks' and is a 'cloud' over the sport, this is one of those tidbits you have to read to fully appreciate. Also, they're calling it 'Fartgate'.
This one is for all of my fellow sneaker heads:
A very cool read from Slam Magazine on the story behind the famous 'Air Jordan' Wings logo. Author Max Resetar interviewed most of the major players and if you're curious about it, this will tell you all you need to know. Good stuff.
A line I've been using with my daughter when she gets upset that a good time is over:
"Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.." - Dr. Seuss
BONUS FEATURE:
I love the Rocky movies. You love the Rocky movies. I got to do a cool longish-form feature with the man behind Adonis Creed's body (Michael B. Jordan's trainer, Corey Calliet), for Bodybuilding.com. If you saw Creed 2 and are curious about how he got absolutely jacked for the role, you can read my piece here.
Have a great weekend and don't cry because this issue of Finkel's Fast Five is over, smile because it happened!
